SCOURGE OF CANCER

PARASITICAL OR BACTERIAL?

DEBATE BY COLLEGE OF SURGEONS. United Press Association—Copyright. (Received Oct. 25, 5.5 p.m.) NEAV YORK, Oct. 23. The College of Surgeons conducted a. notable symposium on cancer. The discussion developed principally into consideration of the question whether cancel* is a parasitical or a bacterial disease and can it be caused artificially in animals by inoculation. Dr. Newsome (Chicago) detailed extensive experiments of .mammary cancer where lie isolated a- definite microcosm and this was injected' into mice and dogs and produced' what he believed was true carcinoma.

Dr. Wood (Columbia- University) outlined" tho major recognised theoretical objections against holding that cancer is caused by a parasitic organism.

Dr. Ewing (Chicago) praised Dr. Newsome, aind verified the scientific exactitude of the latter’s work. He. intimated that Dr. Newsome’s microcosm might actually present in cases mammary cancer and the inoculation of animals therewith might produce carcinoma. Yet other things might be the, real cause of the tumorous condition. r.

Dr. Oclisner .(an ex-president of. the College of Surgeons) endorsed Dr. Newsome’s findings and expressed the belief that a microcosm is conveyed by animal and’ other secretion's. He outlined the tremendous ravages of cancer, which were exceeding yearly those of great wars as to total deaths. Dr. Hevman (Sweden) outlined the effectiveness of the X-ray and radium in the destruction of cancer cells and their power to stimulate healthy cells to combat tlio disease. Dr. AYairal described am operation for pelvic suppuration based on a new technique which he had devised. He declared that of ninety-three operations only one had been a failure and expressed tho opinion that this disease required immediate surgical treatment. —A. and N.Z.C.A.
