“NO SINISTER. INFLUENCE,” Al.s-'P REPLY TO HON. AY. D. STEWART. AYELLTiXGTON, Oct. 2G. The following manifesto has been published : “The attention of the undersigned has been called to the Press report of a telegram despatched by the Hon. AY. I). Stewart to Rev. Bellhousc, chairman of the Methodist District Dunedin. The telegroan alleges sinister influences behind the opposition to the Gaming Amendment Bill. AYe who have opposed Clause 2 of the Bill, which provides for the issuing of 31 additional totalisator licenses, know of no influences, sinister or otherwise, behind the opposition to the Bill and challenge the Hon. AY. D. Stewart to furnish proof of his allegation. Our opposition is actuated solely in an endeavor to prevent any further increase in the gambling facilities throughout the ■ country, the magnitude of which has, wo believe, already reached a stage when it constitutes a. menace, to the welfare of the community. —(Signed) Alex.
