SOLDIERS’ MEMORIAL
BEAUTIFICATION OF RIVER BANK PROPOSED. STATEMENT OFRECEIPT3 AND expenditure. An amount of about £l2B is being held bv the Soldiers’ Memorial Committee* in connection with the erection of the Soldiers’ Memorial on the Haiti Esplanade* for the purpose of beautifying the river bank and environment:-; of the statue as soon as the new Ivaiti bridge is finished. A number of garden seats are being .placed on the esplanade on Read s Quay in the meantime, and will be removed to the vicinity of the monument when the bank is placed in- order. Unfortunately, owing to the slump-, a number of those who had promised .subscriptions were unable to meet their obligations. _ There are, however, several outstanding amounts ■which are overdue, and the lion, secretary would be very pleased to receive- them. The statement to August- 5, 1921, is .as follows:- — Receiuts: Subscriptions received as per lists" £4.160 4s lid, interest earned on deposits £248 2s Id; total £4408 7s. Expenditure: Cost of memorial — W H. Holden £75, Kane and Griffen £3554 105—£3629 10s, brass plates £154 os, breastwork and filling £157 19s lOd foundation £195 19s, flood- . lights £3O, seats £sl 4s; sundry expenses—cartages, printing, stationery, etc., £SO 19s sd, fixed deposit Bank of New Zealand £l2O. creditbalance do. £S 9s 9d: total £I4OB 7s. Balance in hand: £I2S 9s 9d; outstanding subs. £55 10s, Jess doubtful £36 ss—£l9 ss: total £147 14s 9d.
