ANNUAL REPORT, 1923-24
The annual report of the South African Veterans says: The number on the roll remains about the same a.s. last year, although we have lost several energetic members through having left the district. There still remains many cligib’c residents who have so far not joined up with us. We hope this year to enrol thorn all. As disclosed by the balance sheet, we finish the year with a small credit balance. A Dominion Conference was held at Wellington in July last, when delegates from the following branches were present: Hastings, New Plymouth, Eltliam, Chris tchu! ch, Wanganui, Walpukurnu, Wellington, Gisborne. Timaru, Auckland and Dunedin. From the conference a deputation was formed to wait upon the ighfc Hon. W. F. Massey, the 'Premier, to once more urge our claims for recognition. The deputation was favorably received." and early consideration and iegisnlticn wars prom'sed. le conference also resolved that an endeavour be made to obtain a complete census, of veterans in the Don, inion who fought in the South African War of 1599-1902. In accordance with tl)a.t resolution an advertisement appeared in the press throughcut the Dominion on October 18 last - asking all concerned to enrol with the nearest branch. Branches were also requested 1 to observe the first, Sunday in June as the Memorial. Day (Anniversary of the Peace) of the South African war veterans and that festivities and propaganda work he associated With this each year. One result of the conference is a B’ll .row before Parliament giving an allowance of £l3 per, annum to old age pensioners who served in South Africa. The annual re-uivon and smoke concert was held in February last when a very p’easant and eryoyabb, evening was spoilt.
