WEEK’S CARNIVAL.

BIG PROJECT FOR NOVEMBER,

A; public mooting'called by the executive of the Gisborne City Band,, to discuss a carnival to be heltl_ in November to raise funds for representation at the annual contest, yras held in the Gaiety Rink last evening Mr G. Buscko presiding. The chairman said that at a previous meeting an executive committee had been elected, and a programme big carnival to be held at the ltink for one week commencing Saturday, November 22, had been drawn up. It was on a very ambition’s scale, and briefly would comprise a series of. stalls and an attractive entertainment each evening’and on tli -Thursday and Saturday afternoons. The afternoon performances would comprise a sports meeting at the Reserve oii the Thursday, at which both amateur and professional athletes would assist, the events including running, cycling, sawing, chopping, etc. On the Saturday afternoon the two swimming clubs, Olympic and Gisborne, would hold a combined swimming carnival. The evening entertainments in the rink would be in the form of a> series of ‘blights” comprising “A Night in Hawaii,” by Mrs P. Barry’s party ; “A Night in Fairyland,” by Miss F. Shaw’s party ; “.A Night in Maori'and,” by Lady Carroll’s party;’ “An Eastern Night.” by Misses Millar and Galiichan’s party; “A Floral Night,” by Mr Lawrence and party; and “A Pierrette Night” by the Girls Emergencv Club and final by “A Night of Nights,” by Mr J. Vita and party. The particular night to he allotted to each cntertainmer.t would ho decided later. Then of" course' the stalls would bo in full swijig each evening and there would lie numerous sideshows. Lie thought it only right to mention that the hall and the lighting had been given free bv Mr J. Vita. (Applause.) It was also intended that during the carnival several sideshows would bo placed on the vacant section adjourning the rink. Mr Vita said that according to the programme outlined the .entertaturnout should he one of the best ever held in Gisborne. Each lrglit would be different, and the endeavour of each entertainer would ho to draw the crowd to the rink. In regard to the sports meeting, local athletes had been very '’enthusiastic, and it was quite possible also they would put on a ladies race. Everyone be liad spoken to seemed willing to assist. He thought if they worked hard there was every chance of the function' being a record success. Mr A. Cassln said it was quite clear that as far as the musical portion was concerned success was assured. 'Hie matter of the stalls, however, was of vital importance. The executive had already decided on a number of stalls, but more, were wanted. In this connection he might mention that the lady hockey players had undertaken to stock one stall, and in addition would erect and decorate it all ready for use. There wore still, however, several stalls yec to be undertaken, and lie would like to see various organisations take different stalls. He did not think there would be much difficulty in getting articles to sell, and then there wou'd be larger and more valuable articles to he raffled. He was pleased to state that at the meet’ng of the Central Committee the Band had offered to take ore stall, and such nil example should be an incentive to others. The Central Committee would also be pleased to assist the various stalls. Tire chairman stated that in his remarks he had overlooked the art union, for which the first throe prizes would he specie valued at £IOO, £4O and £ls respectively. In addition there would he a special prize of £lO to the seller of the winning ticket. After discussion the chairman announced that to date the following stalls had been undertaken:— Produce.—City Band, ice cream and soft drinks.—Miss Gordon and hockey girls. Tea-rooms.—Girls Club. I Jumble stall.—Children of Mary. Universal stall.—Mrs J. Yv. Young and party. Stall.—Mrs J. Stevenson and members of Women’s Club. ; Fire Brigade stall. Mr J. Lloyd stated that Mr S. H. Phillips had promised a generous donation of calico. It was decided that the Central Committee and the organisers of the stalls should meet on Monday, November 3,
