GISBORNE LABOR REPORT

■ Trade and labor conditions, with tho exception of tho building trade, show a considerable falling-off, especially towards tho end of the month. The retail trade is now exceedingly dull.. /The partial stoppage of tho freezing-works has thrown a good many laborers out of employment, add a considerable increase in the number of applicants during this last week has resulted.

Building Trades. —Bricklaying, carpentry anti joinery, plastering, plumbing and gasfitting aro brisk. painting is still dull, but as the buildings in course of erection are.nearing completion matters will probably improve. Woodworking Trades. —Cabinetmaking and upholstering have declined somewhat since last month, hut so far tiler have been no applications for employment received. Sash and door factories, sawmilling;' and wood-turn-ing, etc., are fairly busy, with -all hands fully employed. Engineering Trades.—Agriculturalimplement repairs, brass and coppersmithing, electrical engineering, fitting and turning, and iron and brass moulding have slackened somewhat since last month, but so far all hands have been kept fairly well empoyed. Leather Trades. —Bciotmak.ng (re-pair-snops), saddlery and harnessmaking are fairly busy considering the time of the year. Clothing Trades. —Dressmaking and millinery fair. Shirtmaking continues busy. * Tailoring (order) very satisfactory for this period of tho year. Retail Trades. —Clothing, hoots, and drapery: A quiet month has been experienced, caused- chiefly by the bad weather preventing country people from coming to town. Groceries normal.

Printing Trades—Bookbinding busy Printing fair.

Meat-freezing, Etc. —Slaughtering, freezing, and preserving: The freez-ing-works have closed down for want of ■spaeo/nnusod by the difficulty in getLiiig shipping-accommodation, and there is therefore a considerable slackening-off in those trades. Cycle and ATotor Trades —Busy.

Agricultural -Operations.—Farming, dairying, etc. : Farm work is busy in all branches. Unskilled Labor.—There is very little unemployment in this district, hut a great deal of time has been lost during the month owing to the wet weather experienced.
