July 21. “It has just come to light! says the “Star”) that even for the Alaori camp at Narrow Neck the Wellington merchants are coolly snatching the trade from under the noses of the Auckland business houses. For the last- few days goods for the camp hare been arriving from the south by .rail and boat. Not onlv lias the Government, Won put to the heavy expense of railage, but the cost of transportation by ferry steamer and subsequently by road to the camp is also being incurred by the apostles of centralisation economy. In some instances the materials which Auckland contractors successfully tendered for despite the hanak-ap ot freight are being returned to Auckland. The whole of the uniforms—coats, blankets, underwear, and pants—are arriving from Wellington. wmle Auckland lias made the boots and some khaki shirts and a firm which had the articles on hand leauv ior delivery received a chance order for the kit bags and hald-alis. As iar as can he ascertained, no tenners have been invited in Auckland tor. otiier limn food supplies and the ordinary camp necessities which, on acoimt of their bulk, could not verv ", have been supplied from elseu here. According to the statements of mei chants, no tenders for clotliinv were called specially for the Maori camp and while the boots are being made m Auckland, the ers. m this instance, had originallv obtained his order for Trentham.
