BOROUGH BY-LAWS.
BATCH OF OFFENDERS BEFORE THE COURT.
NOMINAL FINES INFLICTED
Some twenty offenders for breaches of the Borough by-laws were brought before Air AV. A. Barton, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning. The following were convicted and fined for driving vehicles on the wrong side of the road :—Airs T. Jex-Blakc (Mr Stock), 5s and 7s costs; James Boylo Adams, 5s and costs 7s; David Thompson (bicycle) 5s and costs 7s. Harold Ernest Bright, for whom Air Burnard appeared, pleaded guilty to cycling on tno AVainui Road footpath, and was lined' £1 and costs 7s. Frederick Grundy, who did not appear, was charged with riding a bicycle on the footpath in Stout Street. A line of £1 and tests 7s was imposed. N. Edward Austin, taxi-driver, was charged with) a broach of the traffic bylaws in leaving a motor car in Gladstone Road not parallel to the footpath and not facing in the direction in which the traffic was proceeding. Defendant said that ho was taking a. passenger out to Aluriwai, and the latter got out to do some shopping. The passenger called out to him from further down the street, and without thinking he turned his car round and went back to pick the passenger hip.
A line of 5s and costs 7s was imposed. ■ AVilliam Arthur, taxi driver, was proceeded against for several breaches of the by-laws and pleaded .guilty in each case. For driving bis car on the wrong side of Gladstone Road, lie was lined 5s and 7s costs. For plying for hire on July 3 on other than the stand appointed for the purpose ho was fined 6s and 7s costs. Senior-Sorgt. Hutton explained that it was a. race day, and there was a lot of traffic about.. Defendant pleaded ignorance, and said he did not know it was against the by-law to solicit fares in the street. His AVorship advised defendant to study the by-laws, otherwise he would get into trouble. The same defendant was charged wit-li failing to carry a white head light and a red tail light while his car was oh the stand- on July 1. I-Ie pleaded guilty, and for the first offence was fined 10s and costs while for the second offence ho was convicted and discharged. ■Charles Hyde was charged with driving a horse and trap between "sunset and sunrise without a light on J uly 3. His AVorship said this was a very common and a very dangerous practice. On Saturday night, when returning to Gisborne from Wairoa, bo (His Worship) had passed fully 20 vehicles on- the road between Aluriwai ami Gisborne, and not. one of them bad lights. A. fine of £1 and 7s costs was inflicted.
