BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FORTNIG HTLY~MEETING
Tho ordinary meeting: of the Borough Council was held last night. There were present: Tho Mayor (Mr W. G. Sherratt) and Cvs. 11. Miller, A. Wade, J, Brown, J. C. Collins, G. Wildish, T. CL Lawless, H. E. Bright. The Town Clerk of Wanganui wrote stating that he had received a copy of the Gisborne Borough Council’s remit to the Municipal Association in connection with subdivision of propertry and width of sections, and stated that the Wanganui Council endorsed the attitude taken bv the Gisborne Council. —Received. Mr A. K. Harris, of A. R. Harris and Co., Christchurch, wrote confirming bis telegram to the effect that they would take responsibility of the Edison Storage Battery Co.’s guarantee and also' as a matter of goodwill recau cells at present out of commission free of charge. He stated that this must in no way be taken as an acknowledgment of the cells not having complied with their specilieations, as the present state was entirely duo to outside sources, which would have been eliminated had tlie printed instructions been followed.—Received. Mr J. Warren, clerk to the Cook County Council, wrote with reference to the road in Makaraka Domain, stating that the Council had power under the Act to cause parts of the land to be laid out tor carriage ways. Section 46 placed the Council in the position of being enabled to authorise the County Council to lay off the required road. When the Borougn Council gave the necessary authority, the County Council would then accept all their conditions as to .lonnation, gravelling, etc., to connect the load with the proposed bridge.—lt was decided to reply that the land for the road would have to be* taken undei the Public Works Act. GENERAL BUSINESS. Cr. Muiins drew attention to the report of tho committee recommending that the proprietor of the Mangapapa ’bus be given ten days in which to instal a door at the back of tho ’bus. He pointed out that there was no necessity for this, as there were ample escapes in case of fire. He moved that the recommendation be not adopted.—Cr Wade seconded the motion.—Cr. Wildish said lie would oppose the motion in the interests of public safety. This ’bus carried large crowds, and in the event of fi.ro, there might be very serious results. —Cr. Collins said that as there was no bylaw on the subject the Council had no power to stop tlie man running the ’bus. A legal opinion would bear this out. The proprietor had nothing to guide him in getting his ’bus built, and yet when he brought the ’bus here the Council suddenly woke tip. It seemed an extraordinary stand to take.—The Mayor drew attention to that portion of the by-law providing that no license shall be issued until the vehicle had been inspected, and found to be in_a fit and proper condition for public use. —Cr. Collins said he did not think there was any danger of fire. If the proprietor brought another ’bus here, lie should be informed that it would have to be open at tho back.—>Cr. Mu nils’ motion was then put and carried, Cr. Wildish being the only dissentient.
