TURF.
As tlie result of a bar ly-bruised quarter, sustained when • ring easy work at Riccarton, Wisebird lias again been thrown out of commission. Up till 1 tlio time of her latest mishap Sir Geo. Clifford’s Winter Cup candidate had been doing particularly well in her preparation, and she was one of the most fancied of all tlie Riccarton candidates ■ for. the big mile event. Judging by her present appearance, there is little chance of the filly sporting silk at the National Meeting says a Christchurch paper. ’■ During the season now drawing to a close, no fewer than '42 jockeys held licenses who failed to get a single mount, 24 had one ride, 17 had two rides, 19 had three rides, and 14 had four rides.
An interesting feature of the Bahiatua Meeting will be Multiples initial attempt as a hurdler. It cannot be said that Mr Henrys has taken the least risk with the debutant in awarding him 11.13, as amongst those lie is called on to give weight to arc such proved ones as Ruatangata St. Elmn, and Parewanui. The Multifid gelding will have to be quite as good as his partisans suggest to prevail. Will or lose, his display should give a line to his Grand National Hurdles prospects. The Hon. J. D‘. Ormond will have four horses representing him at Riccarton next month, and the team is due to arrive shortly.
Referring to Sir George ' Clifi'ord’s great blood mare Madowla, by Trenton—Azalea, by Galliard, who died last week at the age of 22 years after slipping foals lo Treadmill, a southern exchange says: “She was bought at the memorable sal'e of the St. Albans Stud (Victoria) for 425gns, and what a veritable gold mine she proved at the price can be gathered from the fact that during her sixteen years at Stonyhurst she produced twelve living foals, including Quarrymanu (Hawke’s Bay Stakes and Wanganui Cup), Glenowlet (Dunedin Champagne Stakes, and dam of Night-watch, who won the Dunedin and C.J.O. Cham- | pagne Stakes, and of Brown Owl . (winner of New Zealand Oaks), j Madcap (Middle Park Plate, C.-J.C. \ Champagne tSakes, Palmerston North ' Stakes, and C.J.C. Easter Handicap), Discipline (Stepniak Stakes and dam j of Court Martial, winner of Now Zea- j land Oaks), and of Adjutant (winner of Middle Park Plate and Dunedin j Champagne Stakes), Gleneullock (Feikling Slakes, Groat Northern Foal Stakes, Middle Park Plato, md North Island Challenge Stakes), and Taskmaster, a good handicap winner as a three-year-old, and who was beaten a nose by his stable companion Kilwinning, in the Great Northern Derby of 1910. Altogether her progeny have won 56 races of the value of £22,272.’’
