AN ALARMING BUT INCORRECT REPORT. “DOCTORS AND NURSES LAID UP.” “SHIP MUST COME BACK.” CHRISTCHURCH, July 18. The “Evening News” prints tinfollowing special message from AA'ellington : “It is reported by wireless from the hospital ship Malic-no that some of the doctors and nurses have been attacked by spinal meningitis. I he disease was developed at Trentham. and the ship must come hack.” GOING AT FULL SPEED. ENTIRE ABSENCE OF ILLNESS. Bv Telegraph—-Special Correspondent AA'ELLINGTOS. July IS. “The hospital ship Afaheno is going at full peed ahead, and ‘there is nobody ill at all." said the Minister for Defence. Hon. J. Allen, to-day. "I received that information last night, AA'e took everv precaution with tlie Mnhetio b.*’ -ire d o \*. *-*nt away.” The Minister added that in view or the fact that the report had been made eoueernmg cerebro spinal meningitis- and that some of the nurses on the hospital ship had been at Trenthaui. Colonel Collins was warned before the departure of the ship ot what- had happened. Order - were given that she should proceed slowly until it was quite < ertnin that everything was well. It was stated when she was a little w*>y out that one of the. nurses had a slight temperature, but- this proved to be nothing serious, and at latest advices the vessel was travelling at top speed and there was an entire absence of illness.
