A PIEBALD CABINET.
Perhaps the most curious Coalition Government on record —of the kind that did not coalesce—was that formed by the Earl of Chatham - in 177 G. Mr Burke’s description of the Patchwork Cabinet remains a jo.v to all lovers of clotted metaphor. It was a checkered and speckled administration; a/piece of joinery crossly indented and whimsically dovetailed ; a cabinet variously inlaid; a piece of diversified mosaic; a iosselatcd pavement without cement; patriots and courtiers, King’s friends and republicans, Whigs and Tories, treacherous friends and open enemies. “It was indeed a curious show, but utterly unsafe to touch, and unsure' to stand on. ”
