The members of the Poverty Bay Scottish Society have been hard at work for some months past organising a monster' Art and Industrial Exhibition in order to liquidate the debt remaining on the fine new lqill, which the Society lias established in Palmerston Road. That their efforts were clowned with complete success was proved by the very lino display which was made at the Scottish Hall yesterday, when the exhibition was officially opened by the Mayoress (Airs AY. G. Slicrratt). The Society was unfortunate in the weather conditions, which prevailed, the day being exceptionally wet and cheerless. Nevertheless, there was a good gathering of the clans when the opening ceremony took place. Dr. AY. P. Porter, President of the Scottish Society, said the Exhibition had been organised in order to gather money to help to pay their debts. The members felt that the most patriotic thing they could do during this period of crisis was to pay whatever debts they owed to other people. If they did this, they felt that things would go along much more smoothly. They felt they would be wanting in patriotism if they did not pay their debts. The Society had done its share in contributing to the patriotic funds, and would he only too ready to help in that direction again. Dr Porter then called on the Mayoress to formally declare the Exhibition open. Airs Sherratt said it gave her much pleasure to he present-, and to open the fair. The Society had been unfortunate in the weather experienced, but slie hoped it would take up., and that the exhibition would prove an unqualified success. Those present then turned their attention to the attractions within the hall. A splendid display was made, the entries totalling the surprisingly good number of 5/0. Around the hall stands were. arranged with wares of all descriptions j temptingly displayed.
