A PLEA ON BEHALF OF THE COUNTRY CLUBS.
[Press Association Telegram.] WELLINGTON, July 14. Air Hugo FriedJander, of Ashburton has been re-appointed chairman of the Dates Committee of the New Zealand Racing Conference. Representatives of country racing clubs in New Zealand interviewed the Hon. Air Herries to-day, to protest against the high taxation on country clubs. Objection was taken to special taxation of 2] per cent, on gross takings at the meeting, including totalisator receipts, irrespective of whether clubs made a profit or loss. The clubs did not mind the totalisator, but felt that 2i per cent, imposed on gross receipts was unjust. They* asked that the tax should only be on profits. Air Herries said he agreed that country clubs should be encouraged. He promised to place the deputation’s views before the Cabinet.
The Hawke's Bay* sportsman Air T. H. Lowry heads the list of winning owners for the present season with tile fine- sum of £9340 to his credit. This amount has been earned by Beldame, Marshal AlcDonald, Balboa. Tete-a-Tete, Campeador, Desert Gold, Alarco Bello, and Carlysian. This is the first time Air Lowry* has held such a high position among Dominion owners. Sir Geo. Clifford is second. to Air T. H. Lowry in the list of winning owners, with £9037 to his credit. S. Reid has been engaged to ride Raupani in his Riccarton engagements. The grey gelding is nominal favorite for the Winter Cup. The most favored double for the meeting at Riccarton next month is Multiply'-Alult-iply, for the Winter Cap and Grand National Hurdles. Amongst the Winter Cup candidates at Riccarton those that have been showing the best form in their recent track exertions are: Wise bird. The Cornet, Slogan, and Banlcsia. Warstep is going on nicely in her preparation at Riccarton and on Saturday dashed over four furlongs in mostattractive manner, accompanied, by Snub. The absence of Air A. Tooman in the Islands, and the death Of his late partner (All* J. T. Hugh), makes it somewhat uncertain as to whether the gelding Admiral Souk will be sent south for the C.J.O. National Aleoting or not. Air Tooman is expected back towards the end of the month, when probably some definite decision will be arrived at.
During last week Jockey It. Gray has been at Mastorion schooling Mr C. E. Wallace's jumpers Eternity and Bransfield. When possible Gray will ride the horses named in their coming engagements.
Two Wanganui representatives for the Grand National Meeting in Awahou and Master Lupin have arrived at Trentham. where they have been schooled. It has not yet been decided when they will b’e sent on to Iticcarton.
The Grand National candidate famake is reported to have acquitted uimself really well m his first school over the big obstacles at Wanganui a few days ago. His subsequent displays have been of such a satisfactory nature as to favor his prospects of negotiating the Tficcarton country. The expenses in connection "with the much-discussed Castalia case cost the Avondale Jockey Club £75 18s.
C. Emerson, who is at present on a holiday trip to Sydney, .will be back for the National Meeting next month. Provided ’the weights are suitable, Colonel Soult will probably be taken south to contest the G.J'.C. Winter Cup. On the conclusion of the V.lt.C. Meeting Mr G. L. Stead’s team of jumpers, consisting of Tim Doolan, The Pole, and Plymouth, will be shipped back to Lyttelton. - The lastnamed, who was acquired by Mr Stead a fortnight ago, is likely to bo his new owner’s representative in the Grand National Hurdles. Two of the first visiting horses to put in an appearance at Riccarton are the Aucklanders Nicomar and Lion d’Or. Both will sport silk in the minor events at the Grand National Meeting. .‘Daylight Bill is reported to bo standing-up to his schooling work pleasingly and recently negotiated several obstacles without tlie slightest trouble. During the week it' is intended to give him harder tasks, when
lie will' be sen t over ''country in company with several companions.. A Multiply is now located at Trentham, where lie will remain hill shipped south for the Grand National ■ Afeeting. On Thursday, ridden by Ins trainer, G. Jones, the’son of Multi fi4 was given a school over hurdles and acquitted himself really well. After racing at Hastings Ardent went amiss and tlihre is little chance of his being sent south to fulfil his • engagement in the Winter Gup, Leonta, who is one of the most fancied candidates for the Grand National J Birdies, is reported to Have come- through an' excellent preparation at Rordell. ITis jumping has improved a lot since be put up such a good race at ilicearton last and altogether his prospects ol' picking, up a good race at next* month’s meeting look particularly bright, "Tragedy King is' reported to have quite recovered from the mishap that befell him at Ellorsfie last month, and is moving along in his work just as well as ever. Present intentions; are to send the son of Soult south for the Grand National Aleeting. Taringamutu, who has been suffering from an. attack of strangles, is now on the high road, to recovery*, and is picking up splendidly. ■ i ; pgr ——■»»
