CANADA MOURNS AND FIGHTS ON.
j “There is mourning throughout | Canada over thy heavy losses in the battle of Tjires. 11 says “The Times' j Toronto correspondent. “The toll of | death fell heavily upon Toronto, Mon- | treat, Winnipeg, Vancouver, and Vicj toria. But the losses are not confined: Ito a few communities. In tile roll of ! honor a hundred cities, towns, and j villages from London to Victoria are I represented. As the first contingent ] was recruited from all over the Do- | minion, so all the provinces arc affect--led by the casualties. With the grief I there is pride m the bravery, daring, ! and endurance of the Canadian regij ment.s. j “Many newspapers demand that j the regiments in training shall go forj ward at once, and that we shall mobilise an army of 200,000 or 250,000. Every member of a corps in training at London volunteered for immediate service. Hundreds crowded into the recruiting office at Calgary. Men m camp at Winnipeg and Ottawa and Toronto begin to fret and chafe for orders to embark.” Lord Kitchener, in the House of Lords, paid a rich tribute to the Canadians for their stand at Ypres j against the enemy’s poisonous fumes — ! “an ordeal to try the qualities of the ! finest army in the world.”
