THE NEW HARBOR MASTER.

CAPTAIN A. CARSON APPOINTED A DISTINGUISHED MARINER. A special meeting of the Harbor Board was held yesterday morning to consider the 16 applications which had been received for the position or harbormaster t-o tiie Board. There wer® present:: Alessrs J. Townley (chairman), R. G. Hallamore. T. Holden. A. , H. Wallis, F. J. Lysnar, J. AV. J. Preston, J. Brown, H. AVhite, D. J. Parker, G. Smith, E. A*. Palmer. G. AA’iiters. T. Quirk. The Chairman stated that they had received sixteen applications for th® position of harbormaster. On the motion of Air Preston, it wa« decided to deal with the applications in committee. After going through the long list of applications carefully the Board decided to appoint Captain A. Carson, of the Union S.S. Company’s Alonowai to the position. Captain Carson’s seafaring experience has been of an extensive and varied character, extending over a period of 29 years. He is 4-5 years oi age. and is a married man with three children. It is interesting to note that the new harbormaster is a Nw Zealander, having been born in New Zealand. In his application to the Board Captain Carson stated: “My sea career commenced in the year 1886, and I served four years’ apprenticeship in the sailing ships .Marlborough and Taranaki, belonging to the Shaw, Savill line, trading between London and New Zealand. I had eight months experience on the officer in sail trading from London to various ports of the world, and obtained my master’s mariner’s certifilate in the year IStU. “Joining the British India Steam Navigating Company as an officer, I had eight months experinece on the Indian coast in that employ. Personal affairs made it necessary for me to proceed to- New Zealand. I joined the Union Steamship Company of New Zealand in 1895, served two months fourth officer, third officer IS months, second officer two years, first officer about six years, and was promoted to master in 1905. Since then I have had command of various steamers in that, employ up to the present time. “During the last four years I have boon in command of the East Coast passenger service between Dunedin via ports to Auckland. Aly commands have boon the steamers Maitai, AA'arrimoo, Mokoia. Hauroto, Tarawora. AYaikare. Mourn, Navun. and at the present- I am master of the Monowai in that trade. “The certificates I hold are: Foreign master mariner, pilot- exemptions for the ports of Bluff. Dunedin, Timaru, Lyttelton-. Westport and Auckland, and permits for AVellington, Oamaru, Napier and Groynioutli, Australian ports exemption certificates for Hobart. Melbourne, Sydney and Newcastle.

“I have had many years’ experience in working narrow waters, both bar and breakwater harbor, and as regards you port- I have worked the roadstead as an officer and master for the past fS years. |T can refer you to Archdeacon "Williams. Captain A. D. Chrisp and Mr Preston, manager of the Union Steam Ship Company, for personal reference.- These gentlemen reside in Gisborne.”
