FIGHTING ASSUMES NEW CHARACTER.
VIOLENT GEIHJAN ATI'ACk'.S. 1M I'ORTANT MOVEAI ENTS HOUND SOUGH EZ.
(Received July 7, 10.15 n.m.)
PARIS, July 7. Fighting at Arras has assumed a new character. The Germans commenced a series of violent attacks against the two extremities of the semi-circles which we have formed around Souchez—that is, against the advance post thrown out in front of Loretto Hill and against the Cabaret Rouge.
There is ferocious infantry fighting on the Angies Road, both sides using stakes from the trenches if their bayonets get broken or cartridges expended. Tlie Germans prevented the threatened occupation of Souchez. The German bombardment east of Amiens is not accompanied by infantry attacks, though intended to foreshadow the violent attack of massed troops. It resulted in a disproportionate loss of ammunition, as the French were not deceived.
Tho Germans are forwarding very heavy guns to Belgium on the railway, ami! evertyhing indicates that great troop movements are proceeding.
