Applications closed at the Auckland Crown Lands office yesterday afternoon for the (lease under the optional system of seven, sections in the Mangakihia 'Survey District (North Auckland), these applications totalling in the aggregate no less than 905. The extraordinary demand which exists for land of this cllTxs in the north will be evident when it is stated that the number, of applicants for one of the sections (3 of Block IX. reached the surprising total of 276, whilst sections 2 and -I of the same block have attracted 58 and 236 respectively. 'Section 8a of block X. has 176 competitors, and 9 of the same block 142. The number 276 is by no means a record, one notable instance having occurred of 700 at Tokatoka, hut it is believed that the former total ranks second so far as Auckland is concerned.
