THE POVERTY BAY TEAM

MATCH WITH UNITED CLUB

NAPIER, Dec. 30

The Poverty Bay cricket team played the second match of the tour to-day on the Recreation Ground against tlie United Club. The weather was line, though dull and overclouded. The wic'ket played better and faster than on Monday and Tuesday. Martin won the toss and the United batted first. Smyrk and Gleeson made a fine stand for the second wicket, taking the score from 16 to 88, ai&d Hughes and Gleeson established a useful partnership for the third wicket, carrying the total to 121. After a separation of these had been effected, none of the other batsmen gave much trouble, the innings closing for 177. Monk bowled well, keeping a good length, and captured four wickets for 20; Derecourt, feeling the strain of the previous matches, could hardly, get his arm over. Olsen, A. Lang, and,Gibson also secured wickets. Bowman’s, suffering from indisposition accounted for the large number of extras. Poverty Bay»again collapsed on going to the wickets, and only totalled 93. Derecourt, Sainsbury.,, and Oates played good cricket. Fenton bowled remarkably well, mixing the pace and breaking from both sides. He captured nine wickets for 37. United scored 141 for four wickets in the second innings, and declared the innings closed. Wood and Gleeson made a fine stand for the first wicket, taking the score to 84 before Gleeson was bowled by Olsen, after a well-played innings of 42. Wood had scored 49 by fine cricket, when he was brilliantly caught at the wicket by Bowman off Monk. Bowman made another brilliant catch immediately afterwards, dismissing Smyrk off the same bowler. Monk, Olsen, Moore, and Anderson bore the brunt of the ctcio k At the call of time, 6.30 p.m., Poverty Bay had scored 124 for eight wickets. Bowman and Oates gave a fine display of vigorous hitting. Gibson and Anderson were the only other batsmen to reach double figures. Fenton and Hughes bowled well. The Gisborne bowlers are feeling the effects of heavy work.- and the captain intends resting the principal bowlers in view of the match against the strong Sciude eleven on Friday. THE PLUNKET SHIELD. AUCKLAND v. OTAGO.—A DRAW. [Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Dec. 30. The” last day of the Otago-Auck-la,nd' representative match for the Plunket Shield was characterised by some remarkable play. Otago carried the second innings score to 159. Williams, who gave several chances, being top scorer with 35. Relf and Howden a'gain bowled well, Auckland having four hours to play and 302 runs to get to win decided to play out time. Three wickets fell for 22 runs and then Hemus and Hadden became associated in a stonewall, the usually free scoring batsmen adopting tactics foreign to them. Hadden was partnered later by Sale and Cummings, being not out for 57 runs at the close of the day’s play. The result was a draw, Auckland having scored 160 for the loss of five wickets. At a meeting of representative Australian cricketers it was resolved to ask tlie Board of Control to meet representatives and discuss tlie financial proposals of the cricketing tour. Mr Noble said that the Board was interfering, to an unjustifiable extent with -the earnings of players in. England. Messrs Noble, Hill, and Laver were appointed delegates should the Board agree to a conference.
