SCULLING.

THE WEBB-ARNST RACE

[Press Association.]

WANGANUI, Dec. 8

Webb and Arnst nut in useful trainin" work to-day. In the afternoon Webb gavo Green five or six lengths start and caught him at a mile. Only two miles were covered, the champion putting his boat through the water in. rare style. Arnst, Fogwell, and Braithwaite started together. Arnst rowed 28 to the minute for -a quarter of a mile and finished strongly. George Wlieleh visited the scullers’ camps this iafternoon. He had not seen Webb since the 'latter beat him at Wellington, and he was -amazed. Webb, he says, is a different man altogether to what he was then. His style has improved out of recognition, while the man himself has grown bigger in every way. Webb is the most perfect sculler Whelch has even seen, and he does not know of any man who could hope to beat him. Whelch was surprised at the rowing powers of Arnst, who does marvellously well, though his stjde is far from perfect. There is. no doubt he gets marvellous pace out of his boat, but how he does it Whelch does not know, as he seems to depend mainly on the strength of ■ his arms, iand not on' body work. ■
