NARROW ESCAPE OF INMATES

CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 7. - A two-storeyed house containing eight rooms, situated at tho corner of Stafford and Madras Streets, was destroyed by fire early on Sunday morning/ The house was owned by Mr. John Moffat, and kept <ui a boarding house by Mrs. Trcndle. When the fire was discovered by Mrs. Trendle it was burning fiercely in the kitchen and had evidently Abcured ,a firm hold. Mrs. Trendle at once aroused the other occupants of the house, who numbered six. So rapidly did the flames spread that it was all they could do to get out safely in tfie scantiest of attire. One of tliefeboarders, named Bell, found his retreat front |i. bedroom in the top storey cut off bv the fire and smoke, and jumped from* tfie window on to a mattress held by a spectator. Bell landed heavily' enough to upset his help and also to severely sprain his own ankle. Very little furniture was saved, and tlie ‘ boarders lost practically everything. The building was insured for £640 in the Royal Exchange office. The furniture was insured for £2OO in the South British office.
