SUNDAY CONCERT
There was a large audience in His Majesty’s Theatre last evening, when Airs. E. B. Buckeridgo gave a sacred concert. Mrs. Buckeridgo was in excellent voice, and sang “Beloved, it is Morn,” “My Dear Zoul,” and for her concluding number the prayer “Avo Maria.” Mr. H. C. Pliillips, who has a pleasing light baritone voice, sang Bevan’s “Flight of Ages” and “The Link Divine.” All*. Harold Piper acted as accompanist. Herr Kuhn, of Christchurch, who is on a visit to Gisborne, greatly pleased the ■audience bv bis interpretation of .Mendelssohn’s “Concerto” in E. Minor, and as an encore piece Raff’s “Cavatina.” Air. C. J. Swallow played as a flute solo Schubert’s “Serenade,” and Air. Harold Piper played a pianoforte- solo. Air., W. Johnston Brown recited “Conrad the Cobbler.” and “Lullaby,” the latter piece earning an encore.
••AIRS. WIGGS OF THE CABBAGE PATCH.” Behind tho “make-up” of the quaint types that figures in the play “Airs. Vs igg.s of tho Cabbage Patch,” which Mr. J. C. Williamson' will present to a Gisborne audience on Thursday next at His Ala j sty’s Theatre, are some interesting particularities. Aiiss Ada Dwyer, who lias scored such a success in the titlo role, has ail established position in_ America as a character actress. For four seasons .she supported Aiiss Eleanor Robson. She was also tho original Aiiss Loadboater in “Alorcly Alary Ann” in London. In Now York also the name of Miss Helen Lowell is well-known in theatrical circles. Her impersonation of Aiies Hazy shows tho sacrifice she is prepared to make to art. Aiiss Lowoil was the original Polly Love in “The Christian” when Hall Caine’s play' was produced in America. Of no lesser professional standing is Aiiss Helen Raymond, who-depicts artistically the unattractive Airs Eichorn. For eight years she has enjoyed an all-round experience across the Pacific, and is proud of having been associated with the late Augustin Duly, one- of the greatest producers America has seen. Air. J. AY. Smilov, is an nctor oi wide experience, and Air. John AA’ebber, the Stubbins of the cast, is a
representative character actor, who has, in the course of a successful career, supported Aiiss Blanche Bates, under the Belasco management. The company that will present the play is spoken of as an especially powerful one. The Box-plan opens this morning at Aliller’s.
