Adamson, for a second conviction within six months, was fined 10s and 2s costs, or 48 hours, and John McManus, similarly fined a week ago was penalised to the extent of £1 and costs or 4 days. FALSE PRETENCES. The man Wm. Jas, Inirie, alias James, who pleaded guilty on Wednesday to a charge of obtaining £3 Os'Od from H. J. Grieve by means of a valueless cheque, was broughtup for sentence. Accused said that for three years had not known exactly what he was doing and for the last- eight, months in particular he had certainly notbeen in liis right mind. He .asked for a lenient sentence as he intended, when it became possible for him to do so to malts restitution.

His Worship said that the police report was most unfavorable. He bad; a knowledge of the circumstances of the charge to which accused had pleaded guilty and he did not think the ease was one for the application of the Probation Act. Accused would be sentenced to three months’ im* prisonment with hard labor in this Napier prison. THEFT OF A CYCLE. John Harling was brought tip for£i& sentence on a charge of the theft of a bicycle. Sergt. Hutton appeared for the prosecution, and upon his application accused was remanded to appear at - New Plymouth on the 9tli inst. Bail ** was allowed, accused in £IOO and two sureties of £SO each.
