CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

MEETING OF COMMITTEE.

The monthly meeting of tlio Executive of the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce was held in the Borough Council! Chambers at 4 p.m. yesterday. Present: (Messrs J. Townley (chairman), J. W. Bright, E. W. Burton, \V A. O’Meara, T. E. Toneycliffe, and F. H. W. Traill. Apologies non-attendance were received train Messrs A. F. Kennedy and R. JohnSM A letter was read from the Hastings Chamber of Commerce asking the co-operation of the Gisborne Chamber in the matter of pushing the claims of the proposed railway between Napier and Gisborne. The committee decided, on the motion of Mr. Townley, seconded by Mr. Bright, that a reply be sent to the effect that as our own railway to the Motu required all. our concentration at present, this Chamber cannot see its way to ,agitato for other lines in the meantime.

Mr. Bright brought up the matter of valuation of exports for Customs -and statistical returns, and a committee consisting of Messrs Bright, Kennedy, and O’Meara was appointed to confer with the Customs authorities re a uniform valuation.

After a preliminary discussion of the question of a continuous telephone service locally and some minor proposed reforms, the committee adjourned. ”
