GENERAL ELECTIONS
BAY OF PLENTY ELECTORATE
SECOND BALLOT.
mr. w. d. s. Macdonald RETURNED.
The second' ballot for the Bay of Plenty '’seat took place yesterday. Tho contest was between Mr. W. D. S. MacDonald, farmer, of Moth, and until recently a member of the Cook County Council, and Mr. J. B. Cow, of Opotiki. Mr. MaeDonakl stood as an upholder of the Ward Government, and Mr. Gow offered bis services as a supporter of Mr. Massey and the Opposition party. Between the first and second ballots both candidates carried on u. vigorous campaign, the activity being especially noticeable in the Botorua district. Though the voting was not nearly rso heavy yesterday as at the first ballot, when 5282” votes were recorder I, the number of votes polled yesterday exceeded 4700, which shows that the electors for the greater part took keen interest in the contest, and did not neglect their duty in going to the poll. Up to the time of going to press this morning five small returns bad not come to hand, but these cannot in nny way affect the result, and the present state of the poll shows that Mr. MacDonald has a majority over Mr. Gow of 4-31 votes. Jn the first ballot Mr. MacDonald polled 2413 votes, Mr. Gow 190 votes, and Mr. Lundon SOI votes; so t-Uit on the figures at present available Mr, MacDonald has not obtained a larger majority on the second ballot than at (the first, though his supporters confidently expected that a large number of votes that were recorded for Mr. Lundon on November 17th would be cast for the Government candidate.
Tho following are the returns to band: —
A Press Association telegram from Rotorua received late last night give the following total figures, with five small returns to come in: W. D. IS. MacDonald ... 2592 J. B. Gow ... ... 2161
