EARTHQUAKE AT WHAKATANE.
A VIOLENT SHOCK.
SUPPOSED 'ERUPTION AT WHALE ISLAND.

The “Star’s” Wiliakatane correspondent wires: A violent earthquake, Justing about 30 seconds, followed by smaller tremors, was experienced about 5.30 this morning. In some shops packages were shaken off the shelves. The shakes are said to he heavier than those experienced an Wiliakatane during the Tnrawera eruption, although, not of as Jong dwatipn. WJiu r ie Island was enveloped in what appeared to be -a cloud of dense dust, which gradually disappeared, and left the island an its normal condition.
The earthquake damaged the shed erected to hold material for the Whakatane bridge to the extent that it had to he strengthened. Fishermen at sea at the time confirm the impression held at Whakatane that there was an eruption -at Whale Island, or a termendous landslide on the seaward side, which caused great clouds of dust to ascend. Whale. Island is only seven miles distant- from Whakatane.
A SHOCK IN GISBORNE. An earth tremor, lasting for several seconds, was experienced locally yesterday morning about. 8.35 a.m.
