PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.
MEETING OF COMMITTEE
A meeting of the Committee of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty t-o Animals was'held at the Borough Council buildings on Saturday afternoon. There were present: The President (Colonel Porter). Mesdamcs Walker.i Chatterton, Porter, Goffe, Haultaiu, and Kingston. Misses Greer and Chatterton.
The Executive Committee's report was submitted re the result of the competition essays from the public schools upon the subject of kindness to dumb animals: ‘‘Four schools competed—Gisborne Central. Ma kauri, Mangapapa, and Matawliero. Five standards competed, the total essays numbering 73. Some of the headmasters considered the limitation of 250 words too low. The prize-list was handed in, there being 17 winners and 14 others highly commended.” It was resolved that prize essays bo not published in full, but that the names of winners and special extracts from the writers be published in a future issue of the papers. The ladies carrying out the competition were accorded a vote of thanks.
The Hon. J. Carroll was elected a Vice-President.
It was considered advisable to appoint a relieving secretary to carry on the correspondence, etc",, and Miss Greer consented to act pending: ,a reply from Mr. Hard tain as to whether he would act.
It was resolved that reports bo obtained from the inspector and treasurer to lay before the executive committee re the present numerical strength of the society and fees collected'.
