In connection with the performance of “Airs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch” on Thursday, December 10, a lato train wil leave Gisborne for Pub a at 10.45 p.m., after the close of the performance. Special arrangements have been made by tho “Times” for promptly obtaining tho results of tho second ballot in tho Bay of Plenty electorate to-day. Alany complaint s have been recently mado to t-lio author,ites regarding straying stock, and this morning a local stabio-keeper will be proceeded against for allowing his horses to stray on to tho railway line. A general meeting of tho Gisborne Amateur Swimming Club will be held in the Gisborne School at 7.30 p.m. to-morrow. All members and intending members arc requested to attend, as important matters are to be discussed.
The public.are reminded that the children’s social in aid of the Hospital •funds -will be field at the Garrison Hall to-night-. The doors are to he opened at 7.30 p.m., and popular prices will be charged for admission. A large and very pleasant gathering is antieixiated. To-morrow will be a busy day in tho Police Court, when several cases are set down for hearing, including an adjourned case of assault, a charge of false pretences, and one of supplying liquor to a prohibited person. There will also be a case of theft -heard in the Juvenile Court-.
Gaul’s “Holy City” will be performed, with orchestral accompa-ni-rnent, -by the Gisborne Harmonic Society, in His Alajesty’s Theatre on Thursday ovening. The soloists -are to be Alesdames Barry and Shierlaw, anil Alessrs Kissling ~ and Kimpton. Tho box plan is open at Air. Aliuer’s.
Tho fairy extravaganza, Violetta and Isidore, is expected to attract largo audiences to His Alajesty’s Theatre on Friday and Saturday evenings. Upwards of 50 children and young people are to bo engaged in the performance, which is to bo in aid of the building fund of Holy Trinity Church. The extravaganza is specially interesting as -a local production, having been written by Airs, T. H. AVood.
Brigadier Glover, of Wellington, superintendent of the G.8.A1. work of the Salvation Army, will arrivo in Gisborne on Saturday next, and will conduct services in the Citadel on Sunday, Alouday : and Tuesday next. On -Sunday special meetings will be held all day; on Alond-ay evening a lecturo on tlie social work of the. Army will bo given, and on Tuesday the Brigadier will tell of the Army’s mission work in Java.
A printed copy of tlio evidence taken before tho Parliamentary Committee in reference to the proposed Consolidated Friendly Society’s Bill was produced at tho Oddfellows’ Lodge last evoning, -and a small portion of it was -read to the members. The evidence makes very interesting reading for those who tako active part in friendly society work. Memb'ors desirous of Tending the evidence may obtain the copy on application to tho secretary (Bro. C. H. Ambridge). Air. AY. K. Chambers yesterday received a cable message from Edinburgh convoyiug tho sad intelligence that his son Arthur, aged 26, had died suddenly at Edinburgh, where ho had been prosecuting Qiis studies as an electrical engineer. The young mail was known to many friends in this district, and was a very estirnablo young fellow, of high ability. Ho wont to the Armour Institute to study, and' passed his examinations very creditably. About 15 months -ago he went to Edinburgh to continue his studies, and recently contracted scarlet fever. A cablegram was received on Friday mentioning that ho was ill, and yesterday the sad nows of his death was received. In spite of the accusations stated to have appeared in articles in the German press that Britain is privately prompting the Turkish boycott- of Austrian goods, and warning the Young Turks ' -to beware, this week it’s cold handle pokers for sevenpence each at Parnell’s Popular Saturday Sales, fifth ihst t only.
