OBITUARY.

A NOTABLE MAORI

PALMERSTON N.. Nov. 19

The death is announced' of Kerei Te Panau, a notable chief of the Rangitane and* Rangitikei tribes, at Awapuui, last night. Kerei, familiarly known as Grey, was supposed to the oldest native in the Dominion. His age is not exactly known, but his references to events of the past, which he stated .lie had seen, showed that he had reached over 120 years. Many years ago Kerei married Erenc te Awe Awe, sister of a chief whose memorial is now a conspicuous object in the Square, and with his wife and Te Awe Awe, brought-a bout friendly relations between the natives of Manawatu and tlie early settlers, though contrary to the wishes of the family. It is expected tho natives will hold o large tangi at Awapuui.
