CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 7. --The New Zealand Cup mooting opened to-day in lino weather, although during tho early part of the afternoon a cold easterly wind made matters -rather unpleasant for the spectators. There was a very large attendance, including Lord Plunket and suite. The course and surroundings were in capital order, and the racing throughout was extremely interesting, the times registered being very fast. The totali-sator investments amounted to £22,956, as against £28,041 last year, but this deficiency wil be more than made up by fees from the fifty-nine -bookmakers who wore licensed.

The following were the results of tho racing: Spring Hurdles Handicap, of 250 sovs., 2 miles. —Lyrist, 10.13, 1 ;Snip, 9.9, 2; .Stormont, 12.6, 3. Also started: Yosami 9.7, AVhatakura 9.5, and Northern (Star 9.0. Lyrist was always ill*a good position, and drawing away at tho toil turn, iron comfortably by two and a-half lengths, Stormont three lengths away third. Time, 3min 51 4-ssec.

Flemington Stakes, 5 furlongs:Hayfield 1, Simmerette 2, Apple Pie 3. There were 11 starters. Won by 11 lengths. Time, lmin 43sec. V.R.C. Handicap, 1 mile: King’s Cross 1, Lady Diffidence 2, Tulkeroo 3. Twelve other started. Mazarine led into- the straight from King’s Cross, with Tulkeroo- on the outside. A great race caused intense excitement, King’s Cross winning by a long head, half a head between second and third. Time, 3rnin 2sec. C. B. Fisher Plate, 1$ miles: Alawa 1, Peru 2, Pink ’Un 3. There wer no other starters. Peru went to the front at the bridge, and made the pace a cracker. Alawa on the outside led into the home turn by three lengths. Pink ’Un faded away, and Alawa won by half a length. Pink ’Un a bad third. Time, 2min 36:1 see. Victoria Steeplechase, .about two miles: Nigel 1, Seymour and No Trouble dead-he-at. Six others- started. Nigel ran into tlio straight from No Trouble and Seymour, and a- great race resulted between these two, Nigel finishing six lengths ahead of the two, who made a dead-lieat.
