J. B. Gow gave a splendid address to a good meeting, and made a marked impression as an able speaker. Ilis arguments had the genuine ring all through, and he showed himself to be thoroughly in touch with all that is progressive. He will poll well here. Air. Watkins was chairman of the meeting, and a unanimous vote of thanks was passed. THE AIINRSTER OF LANDS. [Press Association.] GORE, Nov. 6. The lion. R. AlcNab addressed a large audience in the Town Hall last night. He combatted the idea that the Government wished to attack freeholds. He claimed that be had done more than any previous •Government for that tenure. He defended his action on the Aleikle Bill, and differentiated between his position as a private member and one of the Cabinet. He said the time had arrived for more attention to administration. and less to legislative problems. He defended the dairy regulations. He would have preferred the absolute majority to the second ballot. He thought’ the labor legislation would be effective. A vote of thanks and confidence was carried by acclamation. [Press Association.] INVERCARGILL, Nov. G. Air. A. A. Pcape has been nominated for Invercargill. 31 v. W. A. Aiorris, who is opposing Sir Joseph Ward for Awarua, addressed the electors at Wuikiwi last night. He declared himself an Independent Liberal. He was opposed to the Second Ballot Act. As to defence, lie put forward what amounted to a scheme of citizen soldiery. lie did not believe in remitting taxation, while at the same time carrying on a borrowing policy. He accused the Government of- extravagant administration. The Arbitration Act was a good measure, from which much benefit might have come. Unfortunately it had failed' to stop strikes, but this was not the fault of the Act itself. If they had had the right man at hand when a difficult situation arose there woidd have boon no tr-oubl'A. He believed- in Mr. Alil.lar, but did not tli-ink he was permitted by the Cabinet to -do- what lie wanted. He believed the country could -stand -a continuous small stream of immigration, but the possession of a certain amount of money should not bo the only test of suitability. Immigrants should be very carefully selected.'

The Leader of tlio Opposition (Mr. W. F. Massey) returned 1 from the South yesterday, and speaking to a “Herald”._ representative, _ expressed himself as very well satisfied with his Southern tour. Ho has been wed received elsewhere. “The meeting at Timill'll,” he said, “was certainly one of the most enthusiastic I have, ever had the opportunity of addressing.” Questioned as to the prospects of his party, Mr. Massey said it was impossible to forecast what would happen. “Looked at from the Opposition point of view.” he said, “the IndicUtjonj? are decidedly favorable, and I believe that our party in Parliament will he very considerably strengthened. Further than that V cannot express an opinion. v Big fields are going on in at (least 40 of. the country and suburban electorates.” Mr.- Massey intimated that he would next week reply to tho speech which Sit; Joseph

Ward is to deliver in, Auckland on Saturday evening, and the reply will probably be made at Devonport.

DUNEDIN, Nov. 6. Mr. Thos. Mackenzie was nominated for Taiori to-day. The following nominations have been made: —Dunedin North, Mr. Barclay (Government) jTuapeka, Messrs R. Scott (Opposition) and J. A. Macpherson (Government). Mr. T. K. iSidey has been nominated for Dunedin South, and Mr. E. H. Clark for Chalmers.
