TRADE MONOPOLY VERSUS MORAL & SOCIAL REFORM. ■\Y hich IS THE £)AY? THE Liquor Party aro trying to persuade the Electors that NoLicense has railed, and to do tine u re publishing MANY HALF-TRUTHS, and many ABSOLUTE MISREPRESENTATIONS. They have large, wealth at their back, so that; they can spend heavily, whereas the NoLicense party has to depend entirely upon the voluntary sacrifices of its sympathisers. ■|\/|r THEY that. Ashburton according to Parliamentary returns consumed 102,982 gallons of beer and 18,131 gallons of spirits and vine. They would like Electors to believe that this was consumed in a single year, and carefully refrain from stating the real truth that this covered a period of FIVE Y\EARS, a . very moderate quantity indeed compared with any license area. THEY SAY that No-License districts drink as much or even* riu.ro than licensed ones, when official f;gures show that the three no-licen.se towns of Invercargill, Ashburton, and Oamaru ALL TAKEN TOGETHER, consumed last year just about. HALF the amount of beer and spun's Iliot Gisborne returns show. ,7’Uo figures are:— - Beer. Wine & Spirits Gisborne ... 180,945ga1s 24,000ga1s Ashburton ... 20,596ga1s 3,62Ggals Invercargill 57,753ga1« 4, ; S32gais Oamaru ... 14,334ga1s - 4,842ga1« THEY SAY' that No-License increases crime and offences relating to drink (an audacious statement!) when every no-license town shows an extraordinary ' decrease in convictions for drunkenness and of crime generally, bearing in mind that some , nolicense towns, such as Invercargill, have to include in tlxeir police returns the crimes and offences of large surrounding licensed areas. THEY SAY that No-License means greatly increased drinking in the homes, a statement which is directly contradicted by those living in nOlicense districts and not interested in the trade. “I found,” says the Rev. E. Whitehouse, of Ashburton, “that there was not a single home into which liquor was taken except the homes which had learned to take if before no-license was carried, while on the other hand I began to hear of one liome after another which found itself able to do without the liquor it used to have in the hotel days.’’ THEY SAY -that Invercargill isi an illustration of the failure of NoLicense.' The Mayor of Invercargill, however, says, “I would regret to sec licenses restored.” Which opinion is likely to be' the more worthy of consideration? YOTE FOR MORAL & SOCIAL REFORM ANITJS T OT FOR LIQUOR MONOPOLY,
