The distance is two miles, and over 20 horses, including several from New Zealand, are engaged: to compete in the race. THE VICTORIAN DERBY. DETAILS OF THE RACE. United Press Association. CormiGHT SYDNEY, Nov. 2. The “Herald, 5 5 describing tlio Derby, says there was a splendid start, which Alawa was the first to take advantage of. Wai-ila dashed past his stable mate, and going at a solid pace, set- up a gap of six lengths at tlic bi'idgo, where Alawa and Lord Nolan were nearest, and The Brewer and Parsec were in the rear. Wai-ili.v came back to his field as they raced along the back. . Alawa closed the gap at the abattoirs, and soon after Wai-ila beat a hasty retreat, and left Alawa. and Lord Nolan disputing the lead,.a couple of lengths ahead of Parsec and The Brewer. Alawa shook oft' Lord Nelson coming round the turn. When heads were turned for home Parsee ran past Lord Nolan, and went in pursuit of Alawau The latter, with -plenty in. reserve, romped homo lan easy wanner, with Lord. Nolan an indifferent third. The “Telegraph” says -Alawa’s style stamped him as the finest Mafcter that has yet been produced, while if judged -by a time test, -he .was at least equal to any previous winner of tlie Jjlue ribbon, - -
