United Press Association. Copyright

SYDNEY, Oct. 21

A fire was discovered this morning at- the 20ft level of Block 14 mine, Broken Hill, close to the Proprietary boundary. One hundred and fifty men have been thrown idle owing to the smoke and gas. Large quantities of water were poured into the mine.

Latest reports are that the fire has been beaten back, and is practically in hand, but the gas is very bad, and the work of subduing the fire is being conducted with great difficulty. The fighters were repeatedly overcome by fumes. One named Eddy is missing. His mate was rescued in an unconscious condition. Heroic efforts were made to reach the place where Eddy was stationed, but the gas drove the rescuers hack.
