Constable AlcPherson has received notification o-f his transfer to .Wellington, and will be replaced here by Constable Edward Dwyer, from Auckland. ' . . Dr R. AI. Coulter, permanent head of the Canadian Post and Telegraph Department, is leaving Vancouver by the •Mamma to confer with the New Zealand and Australian Governments, on behalf of the Canadian Government, in the matter of an All-Red mail route. . ’ There is ..living in Auckland to</ay a Balaklava hero. Air. Pryke, who, at the age of 77, finds it very hard to get his living at his trade (painting.), although necessity compells him to work when almost incapable through the infirmities of old age,* as he is not in receipt of a pension. Air. Pryke was a trooper in the 6th inimkricn Dragoons, and was sent to the • rjmea in 1864. The troopship he went cut in (the Europa) was burnt ai the Bay of Biscay, and he was one of tic nine saved out of the draft ol- fit* regiment. His commander, Co lone Willoughby Aioore, was burnt in ! h vessel. Air. Pryke fought at I'a'aklava, Inkermau, and' Sebastopol, lot which he received the Turkish and Crimea medals and three bars. He took part in the famous charge oi the hcavv brigade under Lord Lucan. Out of 395 men of his regiment who went to the Crimea, only 25 lived to return to England. He also served in the New Zealand forces in 1864, for which lie received the medal. His wife died 35 years ago. His children are all dead, "so he ds absolutely; alone in the world. The Auckland Painters Union is organising a benefit performance and subscriptions to enable-the olcllv soldier to end his days in comNews by mail states that Air. Rollo Ho veil, second son of the late Dean Hovell, was ordained deacon at 84. James’ Church. Fulham,- London Out of a number of oilers, Air.
