ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. " YOUNG MAN BEFORE THE* COURT. „ [Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 16. At the (Magistrate’s Court, a young man named James Millies was charged with having attempted to take his .own life, by shooting, at- DallingtOn, on October lotih. The accused eamo from Yorkshire, and had been in the Dominion about a year. He had attended a wedding on Tuesday, and considered lie had been slighted by a girl, with whom he was in love. This so depressed him that he ‘became melancholy. A letter addressed t-o the girl was found oil him, telling her of his infatuation, and declaring she had broken his heart, and that lie intended to kill himself. The Magistrate severely admonished the young man for his foolish act, but considered that as he had only inflicted a slight wound on liis arm he had not reallv meant to tke his life, hut Hither intended to frighten the girl and create a stir. The accused, His Worship remarked, was a young man, only twenty-one years of age, and he would not send him to gaol, but instead would remand him for i.i week, to the Samaritan Home, and if at the end of that time the Court received favorable reports the accused would be discharged.
