MARINE ENQUIRY.
THE COOK STRAIT COLLISION.
[Press Association.]
WELLINGTON, Oct. 2. At the magisterial inquiry into the recent collision in Cook Strait between the steamers Penguin and Gertie, U A. Pearson, second engineer of the Gertie, and J. W. Watson, chief mate of the Gertie, gave evidence. The latter said the action of the Penguin’s master in porting his helm and running between the beacon and the headland was, to his mind, the cause of the collision. F. R. Gamble, second officer of tho Penguin, who was on. the bridge when tlie collision occurred, said that if the captain of the Gertie had starboarded his helm instead of porting the vessel would have cleared the Penguin. He had the impression that the Gertie’s captain had lost his head. Captain R. Stewart, who was master of the Penguin when the collision took place, said 1 lie collision would not have occurred had he been on tho bridge. The inquiry will be resumed to-mor-row.
