At the meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Philosophical Institute held last week Mr H. Hill delivered an interesting lecture on “A Lost River.” The Very Rev. Dr. Kennedy occupied the chair. Mr Hill, in the course of an interesting address, showed that the shingle beds which stretched from the Kidnappers to Gisborne indicated the existence at one period of a huge river running from Gisborne past Napier and down the Wairarapa. As had been shown, by soundings taken by the' Challenger, the eastern coastline of tlie- island in those times was at least 100 miles further to the east. The upheaval of the mountain ranges had probably caused' the subsidence of the coast-lino, which at one tiino had gone even further than at present, so that the sea reached almost tcf Te Ante at this end and to To Karaka in Poverty Bay. The speaker went on to describe the elevation of the coast-line to the present condition; and said that amongst the changes ho looked forward in the near future to the Ngaruroro and Tutaekuri finding tlioir way out to the sea together wasli-out. Mr Hill Illustrated his remarks with .a number of limelight maps and diagrams and also showed, some interesting pictures representing different phases of plant life. Oil the motion of the chairman a vote of thanks was accorded to the lecturer for his interesting address.
