FOOTBALL. GISBORNE DEFEATS TE KAItAKA Tito members of the Gisborne Club bad a nu>st enjoyable day’s on tiny vestordav, when they journeyed to le Ivaraka ‘to meet the country tit teen. The teanij and one or two supporters, left town in the morning in a fourhorse drag, and To Ivaraka was reached in time for lunch. The game was started about 3 p.m., To Kiirnkn having the benefit of an exceptionally strong wind blowing down the ground. Aided by this, the country team made matters fairly lively for a time und taxed the defence of the townsmen. Notwithstanding this advantage, the To Ivaraka men were unable to l>nt the finishing 'touches on to their elforts, and the first spoil ended with no score registered. Gisborne opened brightly in the second spell, and kept up a persistent attack on their opponents’ goal. Their hacks put in somo splendid passing runs, handling the ball prettily at times. Tries were registered bv Cookery, Newton, Pollock, and Herbert Gibson, and Thompson kicked two pretty goals. The final score was in favor of Gisborne, by 16 points to nil. Mr. J. McGVedie refereed. C.S. AND CO. 8 v COMBINED MERCHANTS 7. The game between Common, Shelton and Co. and Combined Merchants on the Domain yesterday was closely contested' throughout, C.S. and Co. proving victorious by the narrow margin of one point, the score being 8 to 7. I’lay was fast and interesting, and at times amusing to the spectators, but neither team was able to penetrate the opposing defence. The game was played in a most friendly spirit, and terminated in a scoreless draw. In tlie evening the teams, and a few visitors, met at dinner, about 40 being present. For some little time past (says a Taranaki paper) several local footballers have been practising tlio Northern Union game “on the quiet," and now a side has been organised. Names of probable players are being bandied about, but as yet the promoters decline to make any statement other than a match is to bo played at Now Plymouth on September 10th against the Auckland team returning 'from Wellington. A “Taranaki Daily News’’ reporter liad a conversation with one of the organisers, and lie stated that an excellent team had been got together, including some of Taranaki’s best backs. The -idea of the players is that they take undue risk in playing football, and as the amateur authorities have not taken steps to introduce ail adequate insurance scheme, they propose to insure themselves by taking out of the game whatever there is in it. And, too, they considered a man entitled to the payment of reasonable compensation for lost time. The list of players will not be available for a few days. HOCKEY. LADIES v. GENTLEMEN. T'he match, Gisborne Ladies’ Club against gentlemen in ladies’ attire, played on Victoria Domain yesterday afternoon, proved a great draw, and caused much amusement.
