MARINE COLLISION.
COLLIER RUNS DOWN EXCURSION BOAT. BOTH VESSELS BADLY DAMAGED. 1 United Press Association, Copyright MELBOURNE, Sept. 5. A collision occurred between the steamer Leura, with over 100 passengers, making an excursion round the fleet, and the American collier Ajax, outward bound. The collier cut deep into the Leura’s starboard quarter, making a hole 75ft square, extending from the deck to below the water-line. The vessels hung together until the passengers clambered aboard the Ajax or were transferred to a tug manned by men from the battleship Connecticut, which came to the assistance. The Leura’s bulkheads remained intact, and prevented her sinking. She returned to port. The Ajax s bow was badly battered, and several plates were wrenched out of position. k - * ie lias been docked.
