TYPOGRAPHICAL UNION.
MONTHLY MEETING. Tlie ususal monthly meeting of the Gisborne Typographical Union was held on Saturday evening, Mr. T. L. Steel in tlio chair. A communication was received from tho Clerk of Awards, Auckland, stating that the agreement between the Union and tlio local printers re linotype operators had (jeon iiled, and was now in force. —Deceived.
A copy of tho proposed amending Arbitration Bill was received from the Chief Inspector of the Dexiartment of Labor.—The secretary stated that the Bill had been considered by tho East Coast Trades and Labor Council, who had forwarded ,recommendations to the Labor Bills Committee.
The Secretary for Labor wrote stating that tho Department was anxious to make tho Labor Journal a reliable moans of ascertaining the true position of the state of the labor market from mouth to month, and with that object in view asked the Union to furnish the Department with reliable information every montli as to tlio number of men idle, the state of trade.during the past month, and the prospects tor Die future. —Tho proposition was approved of, and the secretary was authorised to supply the information. A letter was received from the East Coast Trades and Labor Council asking for an expression of opinion re tho celebration of Labor Day.—lt was resolved to warmly approve of file proposed celebration, although the Union was unable to participate in the function owing to the exigencies of the trade. The socialist party wrote asking the Union to advertise in the socialistic organ. —It was decided to reply that the Union had no intention of advertising in any party organ. The Auckland Labor Day Celebration Committee asked; the Union if it would aief in the disposing of art union tickets. —Tho Union resolved to give a negative answer. An appeal was received from the Wellington Trades and Labor Council for support to the bakers now on strike. —Members expressed themselves in strong disapproval of strikes, and the following motion was unanimously carried —“That this Union, being desirous of upholding the principle as embodied in the Arbitration Act, does not see its way to give any encouragement t 0 strikes, and 'therefore declines to give the Wellington bakers on strike any assistance.” The secretary of the New Zealand Federated Typographical Association wrote in reply to inquiries re affiliation.—lt was resolved to join the Federation. . After some minor business, including the passing of accounts, had been transacted, the meeting adjourned.
