CORRESPONDENCE.
[Correspondence on public matters is welcomed at all times, but it mu6t bo distinctly understood that this iournal is in no way associated with the opinions of its correspondents.] NO-LICE NSE MISREPRESENTATION. [To the Editor.] Sir,—ln Wednesday’s issue Miss Hughes is reported as saying that “the people of Clutha and Ashburton had tried No-license .again and again, and every poll Micro was an increased majority t<> kqep out the open bar.” Evidently Miss Hughes was intoxicated by her own eloquence and forgot the facts. In 1902 in Ashburton 2870 voted no-license, in 1905 2140 voted against restoration of licenses, a loss of 424 votes to the lio-license party. In 1902 1704 voted for licenses- and in 1905 2054 voted for restoration, a gain of 920, or, adding the loss of the uo-license party to the y.lin of the anti-prohibition party, a total turn-over from no-license to license of 1344 votes. In 1905 the voting in the central booth (the business quarter! was. CIS for restoration and only 335 against, which scarcely looks as if the people of Ashburton were anxious to keep out the open bar. I should have thought, in the interests of her cause, Miss Hughes would shy clear of Ashburton. —I am, etc., P. G. ANDREW. LOCAL HOCKEY. (To the Editor.) Sir, —Can you i!et me know if the Poverty Bay Hockey Clubs have an executive, and if so do they ever attend hockey matches? Last Thursday I was a witness from the grandstand and'was simply disgusted to see the way the referee was hacked at by the Kia Kaha players, both in appeals and the manner they took Ins decisions. This thing should at once be stopped as hockey is a clean game; far and away cleaner than any other winter game, and unless a ruling body stands firm referees will be prominent bv their absence. —I am, etc., ‘“COSMOPOLITAN.’* THE CASE OF Mil. SIMSOX. [To the Editor.] Sir, —As I have been accused of inspiring your leading article in your issue of to-day’s date, I wish to publicly state that I had nothing whatever to do with it, and that it in no wav emanated from me, I am still in receipt of a salary from the Crown and it would have been bad taste on my part had I done so. I am perfectly satisfied to wait for developments to see who was to blame for my recommendations and the Board’s resolutions not being carried out in re the grazing runs I valued. —I am, etc.. lANS. SIMSON. Gisborne, Sept. 5. [Mr. Simson’s fears are groundless. Our readers are not at nil likely to attribute the policy of this paper to himsolf.—Ed. “Times.”] MR, KOHERE’S SERMON. ■ [To the Editor.] Sir,—l have looked in vain through “Maori’s” letter for any conclusive reply to my argument. I did not use the word “fair” in regard to the Jew without qualification as he states, but said that the Jew is “less fair usually than a Northern European, yet he has not a colored skin.” This cannot he gainsaid, as its truth must bo manifest to an impartial observer. Then, supposing the text quoted from the Song of Solomon was the speech of a Jewish maiden (apparently it is not expressly stated what her nationality was), it strofTgly indicates that her complexion was nil exceptionally dark one. Why else such an explicit apology for being black? As to the question of the determining causes of complexion—-whether fair or dark—l do not think that climate, if it has somo influence, is altogether responsible for the great contrasts presented by various races. If Mr. Trego a r and some others are of opinion that the Maori belongs to the same as the European, that opinion, unless I am mistaken, has yet to be accepted by the higher authorities on the science of ethnology.—l .am, etc., “PAKEHA.”
