TEMPERANCE SOCIETY’S REPORT. [Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Sept, 1. Al a mooting of the City Licensing Committee to-day, the Clerk (Mr. H. H. (>. Ralfe) produced a letter Irom a temperance society on the question of the conduct of the Auckland hotels during the past'three mouths or so. The letter, which was forwarded by the Auckland Young Men’s Temperance Club, stated that with reference to the report of the Young Men’s No-License Club, which.was considered at the annual meeting of the Committee in January, they have given careful attention to the conduct of the various Auckland hotels . Their members had visited the hotels at irregular intervals, and the reports were in almost every instance considered to bo very satisfactory, and wero totally at variance with those furnished by flic Young Men’s No-Li-cense Club. There had been observed every disposition on the part of the hotels to conduct their business on good lilies, having every regard for the obligations due by them to the public. The licensing laws were strictly observed, especially as regarded the hours of closing and the refusal of liquor to persons showing any signs of intoxication. Even during the pressure of fleet week the hotels were conducted in a manner which called for the highest praise from prominent visitors and from the public. The reports right- through fully substantiated those of the police at the annual meeting. In conclusion, they would point out that the Auckland hotels were satisfactorily conducted and were a credit to the town.

A member pointed out that a statement- had been made in the South describing tho fleet proceedings as “A bacchanial orgy.” Mr. Dyer: You.don’t want to take any notice of these irresponsible statements. Tho police know the hotels did their best to conduct their business in a proper manner.
