MATCH
GISBORNE v. AVAPITI
The representative hockey match between the Gisborne ladies and the visiting AVapiti ladies’ club from Napier was played yesterday afternoon on the Victoria Domain, and resulted in a win for the visitors by the narrow margin of one goal, after a hanlfou'dit game. From the bully-olt. the Gisborne ladies attacked tlieir opi>ononts’ goal, and 1 lie forwards showed some excellent combination. Excellent defensive work by Misses Swain and Freeman drove them back again, but the Gisborne ladies returned to tlie attack time after time, headed by the M isses AYarren and AYalters. Half way through the first snell, from some good play by the local forwards on the AVapiti circle, the ball was driven hard towards the net, and many were under the impression that a goal had been scored, but it was subsequently found that Miss Cranby had succeeded in stopping it just on the line. The first spell ended shortly afterwards with no score on either eido.
After the interval, tlio Gisborne ladies had the best of the game lor a while, but the Wapitis gradually asserted themselves, and play lor a time was confined to the homo twonty-liyo. Tho visitors indulged in some nice passing, and brought' the hall down inside their opponents’ circle, whore, after seme hard scrimmaging, Miss Robertson beat Miss Sawyer with a clover shot and registered the first and only goal of the match. I'rom thw out tho Wapiti hulics hold tho upper hand, and the game finally ended: AVapiti 1 goal, Gisborne nil, For the AVapiti ladies Misses Swam, Smryk, Robertson, and K. Freeman showed excellent form, and .AI issue Osborne, Somerville, AVnrron, and A\ alters wero about tho best of the Gisborne ladies. Mr. P. AV. Biislinell refereed, and Messrs J. Doyle and AV. Lewis wore the lino umpires. . On AVodnesdav evening the visitors wero entertained at the residence ol Mr. and Mrs. A. Somervell, members of the Gisborne Ladies’ Club, of which Miss M. Somervell is captain, mid their friends being also nresent. 1 ho oarl.v part of the evening was taken up with oil eh re, and, later on, there were musical items and amusements ol various kinds, a pleasant evening concluding with a dainty supper. Last evening both teams wore entertained bv Mi's R. N. Jones, AAliataupoko, and will be tendered a dance this evening by tlio Gisborne Lillies Club, in AA’hiiiray’s Hall. . This, afternoon the AVapiti ladies will meet the Gisborne ladies junior team, and to-morrow afternoon will be opposed by the ltata ladies team ; both games commence at 3 o’clock.
’ AVANGANUI BEATS HAAVKE’S BAY. [Press Association.] AVANGANUI. August .20. This afternoon tho Wanganui hockey representative team defeated Hawke’s Bav by one goal to nil. Despite the recent rain the Recreation Ground was in good order, and a fair game was witnessed by nearly a thousand spectators. The local team commenced to attack, but hard Hitting on both sides kept the game open and interesting. The spell ended without a score. In the second half Wanganui had rather the advantage, blit erratic shooting prevented scoring. A goqd dribbling rush by Coe and Sharp, and a pass to Thomson icsulted in tho only score during tho game. Air. AVakely refereed satisfactorily.
