CHRISTCHURCH, August 11. The Grand National Steeplechase meeting opened at ißiccarton to-day in fine weather, and with a large attendance. Tho course was in capital order, and the" racing generally was very interesting, tho contest for the Steeplechase being one of the best ever witnessed. There wore some spins duriim tho day, but none of them were serious. The totalisator investments amounted to £18,066, as against £21,555 last year, but against this decrease are fees from bookmakers, of whom 20 were licensed inside and 43 outside. Results: Hunters’ Hurdles Handicap, ot 100 sovs., once round nud a distance. — Audnx, 11.11, 1; Leonardo, 11.4, 2; Black Friar, 11.4, 3. Also started: Casabianca, Destroyer, Wee McGregor, ’Dreamy Daniel, Circus Girl, \\aliine, .Landla, Ben Fortune, and Thunderstorm. Won easily by two lengths. Time, 3min 3sec. Trial Hurdle Handicap, of 150sovs., one mile and three-quarters. —Scotty, 11.3, 1; Top Rose, 10.10, 2; Stormont, 10.11. 3. Also started: Ghoorka, Snip, What ikura, and Grosvenor. Won by two lengths. Time, 3mm 20 2-ssee. Winter Clip, of oOOsovs., one mile. —Penates. 9.11, 1; Motoa, 10.8, 2; Swimming Belt-, 9.4, 3. Also started : Lupulite, All .Red, Cross Battery, Sir Frisco, Wailethe, Armamonto, Maul of Astolat, North Head, Probable, Golden Cairn, Harvest, Field Gun, Simplex, White Cockade, Landwern, Maharanui, Rose Noble, Chicane, Lone Star, and Don Orsino. Motoa led into the straight, but Penates put in a great run inside the distance and-won by a head. Grand National Steeplechase Handicap, of 1 OOOsovs.. three miles and a-half.—Ennis, 10.2, 1; Le Beau, 10.12, 2; Gold Seal. 9.7, 3. Also started: Kiatere, Loch F.yne, Nadulor, Tilson, Pierre. Starlight, Albury, and Storm. Loch Fyno, Storm, Kiatere, Nadador. and Starlight fell. Eurus and Le Beau were on even torins approaching the last jump, and in the run homo Eurus drew away and won by two and a-half lengths, Gold Seal three lengths away, and AlIjury fourth. Time, 7min 24 4-ssec. T'allyho Plate Steeplechase, of 69 sovs., two mile 6 and a-half.—Zenda, 12.10, 1; Beerpuller, 12.10, 2; Brownhill, 12.10. 3. Also started: Highpeak and Selalim. Zenda and Beerpuller were the only two to get round
