THE MAORI TEAM ON STRIKE. abandonaienFof AIATCHES. United Press Association. Copyright SYDNEY, August 3. It transpires that Saturday’s match Maoris v. Australia, which* was said to have been postponed on account of the rain, was really abandoned owing to a dispute between tlio Alaori team and the League over money matters. On Saturday tlio following notice, signed by Pakero, secretary, and Asher, manager of the team, was banded .to the .secretary of tho Rugby League: “Owing to tho delays jthat. have taken place in obtaining money for our team, the members liavo decided to abandon to-day’s match and all other engagements.” Asher, interviewed, stated: “Tho secretary of tho League, having got an order of the Court to stop money coining to certain members, stopped it from the whole team. The men. want tlio money they allege they are entitled to, and are not going to play for the benefit of the League. They may ns well abandon tho tour. Another thing is, when, tho team went to Brisbane they left eleven, men in Sydney, but when they reached Newcastle (they found these men had been sent after them. The team declined to pay the charges of sending them to Newcastle ; also, some other charges are in dispute.” Aslier added: “The team were paid fully lip to the time of the Court granting the injunction. Our point is that the money should not have been withheld from men against whom there is no injunction, and that is onr legal advice. The League lias broken its contract, anil that is why we do not play.” Tlio League officials’ reply to the claim is that they were debarred from paving any moneys to file team under the injunction granted in the Jack case, cabled on June 23rd. The match against New South Wales, fixed for to-day. will not he played. It is proposed to form a new team to endeavor to arrange matches in Sydney and New Zealand.
