[Presi Association.] AUCKLAND, August 1. The Auckland-Mannwatu hockey shield match, played at Ruemera today, before 2000 people, resulted in a win for Auckland by 4 goals to 3. The weather was perfect, and the ground in splendid order. Tile Mianawatu team had to be altered at tho last moment owing to orte of the members sustaining a poisoned hand, and the combination was thus upset. Auckland secured n lead early in the game, Brooke-Smith scoring from a corner. Shortly after Webb, for Manawatu, equalised matters, ending a fine, run down the left wing with a goal. Before the first spell ended Mason scored 'another goal for Auckland. The second half had not long commenced when Young further increased Auckland’s lead. Manawatu then commenced a strong attack, which resulted in R. Fruser finding the net. Almost immediately ’afterwards Barry notched Auckland’s fourth goal. Manawatu then made strenuous efforts to score, and R. Fraser ag)n'ii found the net. With « few minutes to go, and .Manawatu on the attack, play became very exciting, but Auckland’s defence was too sound. Sherrill’s, Auckland’s skipper, nt right full-back, played a magnificent game, his defence proving Mana.wa-tu’-s undoing. Nelson inlay Auckland for the shield on Saturday next.
