Then Fogwell drew level, and, rowing stroke for stroke, there was an exciting struggle to trie 'mile, which was covered m oiniii 30sec. Just beyond the mile bqtli scullers wer e taking the middle of the river when they fouled, and- both appealed. Tlioroughgood was the quicker to get going again, and he established a lead of six lengths before Fogwell had fairly started in pursuit. Though Fogwell stuck gamely to his opponent to the finish, lie was unable to overhaul Thoroughgood, who won by eight lenglis, in 18min 20 2-ssec. The umpire declared Thorougligood the winner.
