BILLIARD CHAMPIONSHIP.
PRESENTATION OF PRIZES. Messrs Segedin and Ostoja, proprietors of the Victoria billiard saloon, last evening presented tho prizes won in the recent billiard championship contest to the winners, and entertained the competitors at a banquet- in. Dustin’s rooms. Mr. W. Wilkinson occupied the chair, and after the health of the King had been honored, proposed the Host, Mr. M. Segedin, and paid a high compliment to the excellent manner in which the host had conducted the championship tournament. Billiards was a recreation equal to any outdoor sport, and developed all the faculties that required science and skill. Mr. Segedin had shown Gisborne how a billiard-room should be conducted, and the game in his saloon was clean and -free from any evil influence, and novices as well as veterans could go thore and spend a pleasant hour. Mr. Segedin, in reply, stated that it was a. pleasure to him to welcome so many friends. Tho tournament had been full of interest, and lie felt proud of the class of players that took part. Mr. E. Austen had been successful by only one point. He was pleased to reside among Gisborne people, who had always shown a friendly feeling towards him, and he hoped all present would have an enjoyable evening. Mr. Segedin then presented Mr. Austen with tho championship gold medal, manufactured by Air-. H. J. Grieve.
Mr. McGonigal was also presented with the second prize, a handsome ease of pipes, and Mr. B. Lucas with a special prize for playing a game in the shortest time
Mr. E. Austen briefly returned thanks for tho present, and said he was always pleased to play among good sports. The game of billiards was reaching a high standard, and a great deal of credit was due to Messrs Segedin arid Ostoja for the way they conducted their roonn
Messrs McGonigal and Lucas also replied. Other toasts honored were “The Competitors,” proposed by Mr. H. Alley, replied to by Mr J. B. Leydon; “The Visitors,!’, proposed by Mr. M. Neill, and replied to by Mr. J. F. Pettie; and tho “Press'.”
During the evenings songs were given by Messrs H. J. Grieve, R. Wilkinson, B. Lucas, and Austen.
