WELLINGTON. July 8
Oregon timber importations are exercising the minds of millers along the North Island Main Trunk line, and they will meet in Wellington to discuss the matter in conference on the 23rd July. Steps will ho taken to induce the Government to prevent unfair competition on the part of foreign timbers with the New Zealand timbers, considering the very large number of people engaged in the industry, ancl the immense amount of capital invested in it. At the Wellington Diocesan Synod to-day, a motion was submitted affirming" the principle and advisability 0 f granting to church women the privilege of voting ut parish meetings. The voting was:—Clergy: Ayes 10. noes 22; laity: Ayes 23, noes 10. The motion was therefore lost, as to carry it required ail absolute majority in each section of the Synod. 'Following is Captain Edwin s weather forecast to 3 p.m. to-morrow: Westerly strong to gale in all p aces in the North Island, south-easterly strong to gale in the South Island, and rain in most parts ol the country, hut snow in the highlands in the North Island. DUNEDIN, July 8. Kubelik gave lvis second recital tonight, the attendance being good considering the state of the weather. The audience was very enthusiastic.
